The featured brand looks at revealing and concealing the body, in a collection full of innovative laser cut leather, which has been morphed into a fashion context. GRID is a graphic, clean and sophisticated womenswear collection with beautiful finishes, unique shapes and intricate textures.

Vancouver Fashion Week is the fastest growing fashion week in the world and the only industry event that actively seeks out to showcase international award winning designers from over 25 global fashion capitals. Since its inception 17 years ago, VFW has operated with a firm belief in being a well-grounded local initiative with global instincts and intuition.

“Mixing emerging and established designers from across the world has been our recipe for success for over 17 years. Vancouver Fashion Week is fortunate to be working with remarkable talent and growing alongside maturing designers. We are grateful that we as an organization can, and have acted as a stepping stone in their careers.” says Jamal Abdourahman, producer and founder of Vancouver Fashion Week.

In the collection, the theatrical element and interplay between angle and light challenges the perception of textures and shapes, exploring the ability to dress the body in hybrid forms, which conceal and reveal the body. This theme manifested itself in the use of natural fibres, mainly leather and organza silk. The leather has all been heavily manipulated, focusing on laser cutting to create one off fabrications. With a unique and innovative approach to design which is grounded in changeability with a heavy textile focus, Howard is manipulating designs into a new context. The design focus for Grid // 2018 is centered around bringing leather into a fashion focus, which explores laser cutting, bonding, layering, weaving and stacking. The focus was grounded in the development of innovative textiles which were transformed to fit into a fashion context, with the creation of a graphic, clean and sophisticated shapes.

Allie Howard is an emerging fashion and textiles designer, currently based in Sydney, whom recently graduating from the University of Technology Sydney with a Bachelor of design in Fashion and Textiles (honours). With a focus on the development of original textiles, her designs are manipulating fashion into a new context.
