Noted Hair Stylist Makes Magic for MILLY’s Models at New York Fashion Week
Award-Winning Stylist Ed Blum of Makeovers Salon of Easton, Mass., Shines in the Big Apple
BOSTON, MASS. (Issued March 2017) — Internationally- acclaimed hairstylist Ed Blum spent early February at the New York Fashion Week 2017 (NYFW) where the world’s leading fashionistas set style and fashion trends for the coming year.
There aren’t many local hairstylists who are connected to the world of fashion in a global way. But Blum, who with his business partner wife Norah owns the trendy, award-winning Makeovers Salon in Easton, Mass., (www.MakeoversSalon.com) just outside Boston, is a rare exception.
He has shared his talents worldwide and has collected leading-edge ideas in his travels. His stylists are internationally trained by him and by stage artists from as far as Russia thanks to Blum’s globe-trotting connections. “No one else in our area gets invited to play important roles in Fashion Week, so it’s a feather in our cap,” Blum smiles. Last year at Milan Fashion Week, he prepped models on behalf of a major hair product maker. He has also worked on Donna Karan’s DKNY show.
For New York Fashion Week, Blum was chosen as part of the prestigious stylist/ consulting team for Wella Life (#wellalife / www.wella.com ) and for Sebastian Professional, both hair care and coloring products made by Coty, which also owns the Cover Girl and Calvin Klein brands. It’s a $9 billion industry leader.
Describing hairstyle trends observed during NYFW, Blum says, “Hair is moving towards a shorter, more natural direction –showing a carefree, ballerina inspiration.”
Blum says, “What an honor it was to be chosen again, to be on the Wella team – working with their main stylist, focusing on fashion for next fall.” His creativity, vision and adaptability – proven over 30 years — have earned him invitations to work with runway models at many international shows. “And what an honor to work with designer Michelle Smith (see photo) and her MILLY team.” Women’s Wear Daily commended MILLY’s sequined dresses, mid-length leather skirts, sheer gowns, and “oversized tailoring.”
The models wearing Blum’s hairstyles sported latest styles from the MILLY Collection which, Smith says, “epitomizes bold, advanced contemporary fashion.” Smith says she “merges American sportswear influences with distinctive Parisian atelier techniques, and uses luxurious, cutting-edge fabrics and precise tailoring” that have made MILLY a cult favorite.(www.milly.com). The offbeat runway venue where Blum’s hairstyles helped MILLY models to be even more beautiful was the Art Beat Gallery.
Blum shares a secret to staying ahead of the competition: a unique ‘Color & Style Think Tank” comprised of his staff who together have decades of hair styling experience. “We have the most talented group of people who are always bringing new ideas to me and our clients,” says Blum. “We encourage creativity and sharing and this helps us collaborate in a more formal way. Style watchers can look forward to seeing some dramatic style and color surprises to come out of our little Zip Code!”
Blum has styled some very famous heads over the years. He was stylist for ‘Days of Our Lives’ soap opera star Kristian Alfonso (Hope), and for TV’s Judge Maria Lopez. Makeovers Salon was the set for the Disney pilot, ‘Postcards from Heaven’ with medium Maureen Hancock, and casting calls with ‘The Rock.’
Makeovers Salon has won Boston Magazine’s ‘Best of Boston’ and Wicked Local ‘Readers’ Choice’ Awards over 18 times in all beauty categories.
