Dwayne visited the legendary showroom of Cult of Individuality in NYC’s Midtown area, while on his book tour this summer of 2021.
Ron Poisson, the founder & creative force behind the label, left his position with a major surf brand to launch CULT of Individuality.

His showroom has a cool rock-and-roll vibe, not only is Ron behind the brand, he’s also in a band!

?

Behind the showroom walls is the event space, where Ron keeps his vintage motorcycle (behind a velvet rope), guitars, and drum kit.  The space is ready- to- go in case there’s a need for a photo shoot, runway show, or jam session. His art adds to the laid back vibe you feel once inside.

DeRo tried on several outfits, while his son Tinashe, worked on homework, and patiently waited through his dad’s fitting, Afterwards Ron handed Tinashe some drumsticks and he let loose playing some drum rolls.

Ron filled me in about the design team behind the label, and their passion of never feeling content on being ” just another label. Poisson set out to create a collection that defines its category as “the brand in the space.

Launched out of his desire to create a collection that is as genuine and true, as his favorite pair of old worjeans. These vintage jeans were patched eight different times to keep them on the wearable spectrum. CULT was born with “authenticity” as its fundamental DNA.

“You can’t do epic shit with basic people”. This has long been a phrase embraced by Poisson, in fact it’s on the showroom wall, and even in pink neon by the jam area. Judging from the team he has assembled, he’s taking the message to heart like never before with the launch of “Ascension” the Spring Summer 2022 CULT of Individuality collection.

Since 2009, Cult of Individuality has forged a reputation as the Jeansmith to “The One, The MIsfit, The Dreamer, The Trail Blazer, The Contrarian and The Upstart. Each a Cult of their own

Our designers feed off the passions of them all – using denim as the canvas for personal style. The design team crafts new takes on the classics, using old methods, mixed with new concepts, producing a worn faded wash.  All pieces are uniquely weathered, and personalized, with the Cult’s particular take.

Ron handed Dwayne the Black Sharppee before we left. His signature now resides on Ron’s celebrity autograph wall.

Looking to watch games with soccer fans like you? You’re in the right place.

Our next destination was The Soccer Tavern, an Irish pub tucked away in the heart of Brooklyn’s Chinatown, which has been in operation since the prohibition era in 1929.
The former speakeasy is located on 8th Avenue, which was once packed with Norwegian and Scandinavian businesses, donning the nickname “Lapskaus Boulevard.” Due to a wave of immigration in the 1980s and 90s, the neighborhood is now primarily Chinese, providing a melting pot Scandinavian, Irish, and Asian culture.
Underneath and next to day spas, eye doctors, and insurance companies, sits the family-run Soccer Tavern. The old school bar encompasses the true spirit of Sunset Park, and has become a neighborhood staple for old-timers and newcomers alike.

Everyone enjoyed a fresh cold pint on this sweltering hot day with the utmost hospitality from the loyal bartender. On their website it states:

Give up your phone for 1 hour and get a FREE pint of Guinness……that’s it!
Easy and enjoyable

Phones down folks, time to switch to pub mode!

En route to Manhattan, our eyes caught the latest memorial mural, by artist Efren Andaluz, of Kobe Bryant, and his daughter Gianna, across from the Barclays Center. We had to stop, the mural was so touching which complemented the nearby Love mural by Masoneve.

Dwayne De Rosario biography “DeRo My Life” is now available across North America

For the first time, Dwayne shares many heartbreaking, life-altering stories from his mischievous childhood; an upbringing that made him the hungry, successful, superstar athlete he became. His strong Caribbean heritage shaped the person and the player the world knows as a four-time MLS Cup champion, seven-time MLS All-Star, Canadian National team captain, and record goal-scorer. He helped put Canadian soccer on the map, and it is clear that pursuit of greatness didn’t come without struggle, both on and off the field. Now, DeRo hopes to inspire, and train the next great Canadian soccer star. “DeRo My Life “ is now available via Indigo & Barnes & Noble and he will be embarking on a North American media tour to promote the book this summer.

DeRo My Life:

The autobiography of the best male soccer player to ever come out of Canada. Before Beckham, Kaká, or Zlatan, DeRo was the godfather of Major League Soccer.

“But instead of celebrating with my go-to shake n’ bake DeRo shuffle, I ran towards the cameras on the sideline and mockingly wrote myself a big fat cheque. I didn’t plan it. It just happened like that. I’d been playing with this weight on my shoulders for weeks. That was the next thing on my mind, so it was just my natural reaction to celebrate like that. And I felt great. I had no idea that would be the beginning of the end of my marriage with TFC.”

“My love of the game started in Toronto. I was so blessed to play professionally in my hometown. It was really special to me to close the book on my career at home too. It was harder than I thought it would be. I went through the whole world of emotions on the day of my retirement press conference. I didn’t want a flashy suit this time. I didn’t want a big room filled with reporters that didn’t know me or didn’t care about soccer. I just wanted to get up there and put a bow on things for my family, my community, and everyone who helped me along the way.”

DeRo is the life story of one of the greatest athletes Canada has ever produced

About Dwayne De Rosario:

Born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario, Dwayne De Rosario wasn’t expected to make it out of high school, let alone to the top of the soccer world. As part of a family of five, growing up in a one-bedroom apartment, he had to work for everything he had and sometimes that meant doing things he realized he didn’t want to do. It was soccer that saved him from a life on the street.

His strong Caribbean heritage shaped the person and the player the world knows as a four-time MLS Cup champion, seven-time MLS All-Star, Canadian National team captain, and record goal-scorer. DeRo helped put Canadian soccer on the map,and it’s clear that pursuit of greatness didn’t come without struggle, both on and off the field.
