Veneers have become an increasingly popular form of dental treatment and are often perceived to be the quickest and easiest option for achieving a perfect bright white smile. In many cases veneers are a viable option for quickly achieving a smile to be proud of. Reality show star, Rylan Clark-Neal is just one of a number of celebs to sport a new blindingly white smile, thanks to veneers.
So, the big question – are dental veneers the right choice for me to achieve the perfect white smile? Let’s take a closer look at what veneers are, the dental problems they are suitable for and what you should consider before getting them.
If you don’t have an extreme fear of the dentist and are determined to achieve the perfect Hollywood smile, read on.
What are veneers?
A dental veneer is a wafer-thin layer of porcelain (or composite material) that is moulded, coloured and shaped to fit over the front surface of a tooth. Bonded to the front of teeth, veneers can be used to improve the shape and colour of teeth, and even disguise small gaps.
The veneer covering takes the place of the tooth’s natural enamel, which is removed to make space for the veneer. It covers the whole of the front of a tooth and is often referred to as plastic surgery for the teeth!
Cosmetic dental expert, Dr. Attiq Rahman, says that while veneers are a great way to improve the look of a tooth (or teeth), “There is an art to getting them to look authentic and natural, which largely comes down to both the expertise of the technician who prepares the veneer and the experience of the dentist to match and fit them.”
Dr Rahman also points out that veneers do not repair or strengthen teeth like a crown and this is also something that needs to be taken into account when deciding on the best treatment option.

What dental problems are veneers suitable for?
Dental veneers aren’t suitable for everyone, or all cosmetic dental problems, so you will need to discuss the possible options for achieving your celeb smile with your dentist. In any case, there may be a more suitable and cheaper option to get the smile you are hoping for.
Veneers can only be used on healthy teeth, so aren’t an option for any teeth that contain fillings. Veneers tend to be used to fix minor dental problems, such as masking cracks, chips and imperfections.
What should I consider before getting veneers?
There are pros and cons for dental veneers as the best treatment to fix minor cosmetic problems. On the plus side, veneers are a relatively easy and quick option, compared to other more complex dental treatments, for achieving a wonderful white smile. Veneers can resolve minor problems such as tooth discolouration, chipped teeth or small gaps.
By far the biggest disadvantage associated with veneers is the cost. They are expensive! The cost can mount up if you are considering veneers on a number of teeth. It is also a good idea to understand the problems that can arise from having dental veneers before you go ahead with any treatment.
What are the alternatives?
Anyone can have a smile makeover, but veneers aren’t always the best option or even suitable at all. People with missing teeth, or damaged teeth that have little remaining tooth structure, won’t be able to resolve their cosmetic dental problems with veneers. Veneers aren’t a great option for people who grind their teeth either as this habit is likely to break or dislodge them.
There are, however, lots of alternatives for improving your smile. If teeth are missing, implants could be the best option, but again this form of treatment isn’t suitable for all. Orthodontic treatments, such as braces, may be a better option to resolve the misalignment of teeth.
Tooth recontouring can be used to improve the shape and texture of any tooth. Or if your teeth are in pretty good shape apart from colour, teeth whitening would be a much cheaper option for brightening your smile.
Crowns may be a more suitable option for damaged teeth or teeth that have fillings.
